How long can a bookshelf span before it sags?
In typical shelving stock, much beyond 30 to 32 inches will deflect visibly under a full book load. You can go longer with thicker material, a stiffened front edge, or a vertical division. What you cannot do is span four feet in thin material and expect it to stay straight.
How deep should book shelving be?
Nine to eleven inches suits most hardbacks and paperbacks with a little clearance. Deeper shelving invites books being stored two rows deep, where the back row becomes invisible. Display shelving for objects is a different calculation.
Can you build shelving into fireplace alcoves?
Yes, and it is one of the most common projects in Lexington's period housing. The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are awkward for furniture and ideal for fitted shelving. We scribe to walls that are rarely square.
What material stops shelves from sagging?
