Custom Garage Cabinet FAQs

Can I use kitchen cabinets in my garage?
You can, but they will not last. A garage in central Kentucky swings with outdoor humidity and temperature, and particleboard cabinetry absorbs that moisture and never recovers. Plywood construction sealed on all six faces is what survives.
How much weight can a garage workbench hold?
It depends on how it is built and supported. We size the top and the supports to your actual intended load rather than to a generic figure, because a bench with a vice bolted to it is carrying a very different load from one holding boxes.
Should garage cabinets sit on the floor?
No. We raise cabinet bases on levelling plinths so the slab can be hosed without water reaching the cabinetry, and so slab moisture is not wicking into the base. It also lets us level cabinetry on a floor that is deliberately sloped to drain.
Will garage cabinets stop my car fitting?
That is the risk, and it is why we measure the vehicle before designing. Standard depth is 18 to 24 inches, and in a tight single-car garage we build shallower. We check that car doors still open fully, not just that the car fits.
Can you build overhead storage above the car?
Yes, anchored into structure and rated for the load, with clearance checked against the garage door track and the vehicle roof. This is one place where load rating is not theoretical, since a failure lands on the car.
