What height should a window seat be?
Around 17 to 19 inches from the floor to the top of the compressed cushion. That means the cabinetry is built lower by the cushion's compressed thickness, which is a step people frequently miss and end up with a bench that is too tall to sit on comfortably.
How deep should a window seat be?
Sixteen to twenty inches of usable seat depth. Deeper and you need back cushions to reach the back comfortably, which consumes the extra depth you just built.
Lift top or drawers?
Drawers are usually more practical because you can open them while someone is sitting on the bench. Lift tops give more volume and suit storage you access seasonally rather than daily. Any lift top gets a soft-close or friction hinge.
Can you build a window seat over a radiator?
Yes, as a ventilated enclosure rather than a sealed box. Air has to move through it or you lose the heat output and create a heat trap. This is common in older Lexington houses and it is a detail worth getting right.
Will the bay angles be a problem?
Not if they are measured. Bay angles are frequently not the 45 degrees people assume, and in an older house they may not be symmetrical either. We measure each angle at field verification and build to what is actually there.
